The best you can do is follow what you are being told, but remember what you used to do-- that way your catalog of possibilities will continue to grow.

Dan and Jackie DeProspero have a great anecdote regarding seemingly conflicting descriptions in "Illuminated Spirit". Their sensei tells them to imagine two people describing a coin-- one from a straight on flat perspective and another from an edge-on perspective. He acknowledges that two very different descriptions will result, but the both come from the same source. Your job is to find where they connect.

Good luck!

KentAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7382112802366525634.post-53352670079501446002011-08-04T22:45:27.621-07:002011-08-04T22:45:27.621-07:00"But I still sometimes get confused by differ..."But I still sometimes get confused by different sempai (people who have been practicing Naginata longer than me) telling me different things."

Yeah. I do not have many senpai so I do not deal with this so much but I have encountered it from different sensei. My own sensei here says that the sensei is always right, no matter who the sensei is in the moment. I think it could be the same for the senpai. In arts like these we get so much input from so many others, so many different suggestions, and eventually someday in the future we get to the point where we can sift through it all and figure out what works best for us. It is like a treasure trove filled with gold.

:)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7382112802366525634.post-81507938149170793322011-07-31T12:27:04.027-07:002011-07-31T12:27:04.027-07:00Thanks for the suggestion of jump rope! I may have to look into that for my light-footedness in kendo :) I would've never thought of that...Gsiwn3e49https://www.blogger.com/profile/10808604495011665188noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7382112802366525634.post-26211605592551992832011-07-21T23:58:47.144-07:002011-07-21T23:58:47.144-07:00Thanks for the compliment about the glossary. I hope you will find what you need to understand and remember Naginata words.
Hope to see you around in naginata event, I will at Nara in September.chloénoreply@blogger.com
